This Isn’t About Stars.

by Jude Abdalrahman aged 11

I always admired stars.
How they could manage shining for 12 hours.
I never could.

There’s barely any stars in my sky
but one day
there was a star that just
appeared.
Maybe a helicopter, or an airplane?
I thought
but this star wasn’t a helicopter
or a building
or an airplane
or a giant signal light
No
this star was the only one in the sky
It made me lose focus on the crescent moon
and the pinkish sunset sky
No
I was just focused on a singular white dot
How could it be so mesmerizing
but so simple
After a while, there was another
not a helicopter, not an airplane, not a giant signal light, not a tower
no
and it moved closer to the first star, somehow

That one is you
and that one is me
