The Beat I Drum

by Julia aged 11

I see them calling
‘Come now, come.’
A lily’s valley
A native’s drum

My shoes so dirty
‘Annabelle, where are you ribbons?’
I tossed them off
The Wagon we’d driven.

Ma is mad and Pa has
“Gone crazy!”
But my sister’s happy
All hats and Daisy.

I’m just there.
“Come here, come.”
Feeling out
The beat I drum
