Poetry Zone’s Birthday

2
by Penelope aged 9

Happy birthday, Poetry Zone!!!
Have the joy in May.
How old are you?
Let’s start the day!

I’ve ordered the balloons,
I’ve ordered the cake,
Where shall we celebrate?
I know, the lake!

I’ve invited lots of children,
Also Roger Stevens,
Sisters and Brothers are coming too,
Most of the brothers are Kevin’s!

I’ve made the fruit drinks,
Some candy too,
But the candy is written,
In poetry for you!

The day has ended,
We’re all here to say,
Happy birthday to you,
And have an extraordinary day!

I sleep in the day
and at night
I go by the light
of the moon

Belief

by Akifah, Aleena, Maryam aged 9, 11, 8

Did you really trust me,
when you went out and
left me?

It was damp, it was scary
but you did not care
You went to a party
You didn’t believe me

You thought I was a random kid
left on its own
you forgot I was your own
It was like a bear cub left to fight
on its own

So when you came back
mad and dizzy, beating me
to the bone

That is when I ran away
from home

Happy Father’s Day
You are a star in my life
You guide me, when I am lost
I learnt from you lessons that I will forever remember
Your joy was the reward for my winnings
Your soothing words were martyr to try again
And I cannot return to you your compassion with money
For when I was lost in the seas
You acted as an anchor
And brought me home

A Child’s Toy

1
by Harshita Das aged 12

Children fight over petty things
Squabbles and arguments over plastic junk
But, in a way, they are exactly like adults
For we fight over things too
Things that some would consider petty
Like money
And religion

Their arguments are our thefts
Their harmless fights are our murders
Their bullying is our massacres
And their street fights are our wars
All of them done for petty things
And the child’s toy is always
Money, religion and pride

Oh! My Dear Father

by Aditi Vishwanath aged 13

Right from my birth, I laid within your safe hands,
you gave me care and protection, just what I needed.

When I was hemmed in, you taught me to be bold,
to say ‘No’ to what is wrong,
and to support what is right.

When I laid sick in the bed,
you brought me dinner
and asked me if I felt better,
and fed me with your loving hands.

When I studied for long hours,
you told me ‘It’s enough’, with concern
You said ‘It’s stressful’
and told me to get refreshed.

You taught me what is wrong,
and what is right,
you told me about society, and how to act towards it.

Oh! My dear father,
what haven’t you done
to keep me safe and joyous?
There are endless words to describe you,
but for sure, I do salute you.

Giraffe

His neck reaches high,
as tall as the tree,
The tree with bright green leaves,
Juicy and sweet.
Trotting around,
Spotted, yellow and brown,
In the hot weather,
Lunching on the leaves,
Giraffe.

Faith

by Aditi Vishwanath

My smallest of sorrows is healed by you,
and in my happiest of moments, you too are happy.

My stealthiest of secrets you keep as it is,
without spreading it as a matter to gossip.

What I like and what I don’t?
You’re the only one who knows them all,
it is because I trust you.

I tell everything to you, my sorrows, delights,
secrets, likes and dislikes,
just because I believe you,
and I, have faith in you.

Elephant

The elephant stands next to the river with its long trunk,
Its trunk that sways too and fro,
And sucks the river up.
Its ears fall in front of its face,
With their flappiness and waving.
The elephant lifts its trunk high in the air,
And the water shoots up
And it goes everywhere!
Like a fountain,
It flies as high as a mountain.
Elephant.

Pandas

Sitting there eating, sleeping, chewing,
Tiny black eyes which shine in the light,
Covered in fur,
Living in the jungle,
Reaching up high,
But too small,
Too small to reach its food, bamboo,
The juicy green bamboo of which it eats,
Black and white the Panda is,
So small, so cute but…
So endangered
