Mother’s Backbone

by Aayat Narang aged 14

Much before the day I was even born,
My mother gave up her nights and pearls she’d outworn.
‘A daughter is a blessing,” she says with glee,
But what would I be without my mother guiding me?
Gave up her dreams so she could stay by my side,
Always working hard with strength and wisdom allied.
Goes above and beyond to cook me meals,
We have so much in common that we even share our heels.
Even in the times I feel hopeless and weak,
She assures me I am beautiful and ever so unique.
Such an amazing bond we have come to share,
I carry her diligence, love and virtue everywhere.
It was with such a role model that I have grown,
Now I hope I’m worthy enough to be her backbone.
