Learnt To Live Without You

by Ananya Narang aged 15

The lighthouse used to watch over the water every night,
still dressed up in its familiar light.
It searched the waves, as if it would say,
“You’ll find your way back someday.”

But tides don’t keep the things they take,
and our hearts must learn to bend though they may break.
So I learnt to greet the morning air,
though each damn still found you there.

I learn to eat, to sleep, to smile,
to make a worthless hour worthwhile.
I learned to walk home all alone,
though all roads where we once stood, still felt like home.

I learned to speak without you name,
to laugh again, yet not the same—
But sometimes laughter feel untrue,
when every half thought still finds you.

I stopped expecting you at the door,
But oh god! I still look there once more.
I realised soon that you’re gone, yet when night turns blue,
My first foolish thought is still of you.

I told myself that waiting is in vain,
Yet keep the light on, through the rain.

I learned to walk where we once grew,
And pretend that these roads don’t lead to you.
But what if…one day you return?
I still wonder what my heart shall learn.

Perhaps, I’ve already learnt to stand alone,
to make unfamiliar feel like home.
But if you ever cross my shore,
I’ll know the sound, I waited years for.

Remember I was never trying to forget,
nor ever did I regret.
I just learned what life required,
to stay and keep breathing even when tired.

And even today, the lighthouse glows,
somewhere between the sea where no one knows.
It doesn’t prove that I can’t move on,
It’s proof and love can outlive even when gone.

Although you left, I learned to stay,
I learned to carry my world each day.
But if you still ask me whether my love withdrew—
I learned to live without you,
not to stop loving you.
