Reaching the Stars by Jan Dean, Liz Brownlee and Michaela Morgan (Macmillan)

An absolute must for girls. Great for boys, too, but good luck with trying to persuade them to read a book with the subtitle ‘Poems about extraordinary women and girls’. It shouldn’t be difficult, but sadly that’s the way things are, still. Which is why this book is so very important. Beautifully written, accessible and interesting poems tell the stories of women who have done wonderful things and celebrates the public milestones and the private moments that have marked women’s progress through the years. If it is only girls who read it, then I hope this book inspires them to take up the gauntlet and carry on the feminist fight. If boys find the poems, then I wish the same for them. Whatever their gender, all children should be inspired to reach for the stars.
