My Birthday

by Adam Rafael Holmes aged 7

When I woke up I followed a trail from behind my bedrail
Of birthday presents with flowers on top.
There was Lego and hot wheels and books and cards
I opened the boxes with superfast cars.

We met at the South Bank, it was nice in the sun
I opened crackers with Sashanna and Mobin
And had lots of fun.
We ran to the water to play and cool down
I splashed through the showers and laughed like a clown
My underpants were cold and we dried in the sun
I was hungry for lunch, it was almost one.

I ate chocolate cake at Strada, It had 7 shooting stars.
I shared them with my friends and opened more cards,
I snapped dynamite strips and crackers went bang.
People came to my table and everybody sang:
“Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me-e, happy birthday to me.”
Mobin ate the marzipan number 7 and Felix cried
But when I asked who wanted it nobody had replied.

I blew out all the candles and made my wish
That I have a triceratops and stegosaurus pet
But the time travel machine has not been invented yet.
I will ask Andrea to make for me
A “give me what I want machine”
With a magic time travel door
And a bottle of “live forever potion” for 3 people or more.
One for me, one for Mama and one for Dad,
So I do not have to have more bad dreams
bout dying and feeling sad.

We went to the Jungle Book show:
Shere Khan was ginormous and Kaa glowed.
Shere Khan’s music was drums other people’s: hum, hum de hum.
Kaa hypnotized the monkeys
And swung round her branch.
I loved the wolf crew and their skateboarding dance.

I wish I did not have to wait a whole year
For my next birthday to come near.
