Top Ten Books For Christmas No 5

Mat o’ Shanter by Simon Lamb, illustrated by Ross MacRae (Scallywag Press)

This is a beautifully produced hardback. It has a striking cover and is full of fantastic illustrations. It’s a re-imagining of the Scottish classic by Robert Burns, Tam o’Shanter. It’s a novel in rhyming verse. It’s bold. It’s brave. It even has a glossary in case you’re not Scottish and find some of the dialect words tricky. I love the author’s note at the back, too. I’ll sum it up by quoting the blurb on the back:
Meet Mat. Rascal. Hooligan. Kid. With his pals, he owns the night. But this night is not like all the other nights. This night the Devil has ‘Business on his hand.’
