A Poem for Every Night of the Year, edited by Allie Esiri (Macmillan Children’s Books)
A whopper of an anthology featuring some old favourites and some new poems. It is aimed at children, but the fact that this is a heavy hardback perhaps hints at the fact that it will sit better in an adult’s hands. Poems to be shared at bedtime might be a better title – because while children should be given poetry that challenges, a little help might be needed to highlight the pleasure to be gained from of some of these grown-up poems. Nonetheless a great book. I might put it on my Christmas list.
