Yes, She’s Changed

by Gayatri Aich aged 15

You called her emotionless
Because she didn’t cry when her mum passed away
You called her worthless
Because she changed a lot, to your dismay
You called her shameless
Because she spoke up against wrong people always

You, her closest friends, left her alone when she needed you
Yes, she’s changed
She’s changed because of you all
And you call her emotionless

You, all the back-chatter, what on earth did you leave spreading about her?
Yes, she’s changed
She’s changed because today she knows the real YOU
And you all call her worthless

You, the timid and silent ones around her, who sit and watch wrong things going around!
Yes, she’s changed
She’s changed because she says, “There has to be a first time always!”
And you all call her shameless

She’s a girl who lost her mother at twelve
She’s a girl who is fearless
Oh, yes, she’s grown before her time
And she’s someone whom you never understood
Yes, she’s changed
She’s me.
