The floor is shiny, glossy and clean
So is the kitchen counter and bathroom too
All shoes are polished, parlour’s pristine
Curry’s been made, along with rice and steaming stew
They’ve slaved in factories, they’ve fought in wars
Although history has wronged, misjudged, misled
They’ve touched the moon, they’ll conquer stars
Fought tooth and nails for food they should’ve been fed
Every book I read, every word I swallow
Every second sat studying at school
A product of protests from women, wives and widows
With men’s contributions, kind and cruel
The 21st Century is a good century to be a girl
Though our past of violence mustn’t be forgotten
As history’s hi-jinks continue to unamusingly unfurl
We mustn’t lose the progress which we have gotten
Brilliant. Well done.
That’s so good, Harshita. Lots of women have fought hard and suffered to make life easier for young women today. It is good to remember them and to realise that we still have a long way to go before we can say we are all equal in this world. Good luck. Keep writing.
Thank you 🙂
