When the First Rains Fall

by Ryan Vijoy aged 11

The sky was heavy, waiting to break, a hush spread wide across the lake. Leaves held their breath, the earth stood still, as clouds rolled down the silent hill.

Then came a whisper, soft and clear, a silver drop that drew us near. It kissed the dust, it cooled the ground, and joy in every heart was found.

Children ran with arms held high, chasing laughter beneath the sky. The streets awoke, the trees all swayed, The world was new, the heat decayed.

The scent of soil, so rich, so sweet, turned every moment into a treat. The thirsty roots began to sing, welcoming back the gift of spring.

Oh, first rains, gentle, kind, and true, you paint the earth in shades of blue. You teach us hope, you teach us cheer, a promise kept, year after year.
