What If Christmas Did Not Exist

by Abioye Mahsudat aged 16

I sit in the color of green and red
I think to myself
What if this did not exist?
I open my book
Looking at the gift of the tense “are”
It gives me care and teaches me to share
I think to myself
What if this did not exist?
I gently lift my curtain
Glancing at the downpour of crystal snowflakes
Hearing the joyful screams of my neighbour’s children
As they wrap the snow flakes and play the snow game
And I think to myself
What if happiness did not exist?
As I turn
I see my mother hanging socks over the dustless chimney
I see her smile
As she glances at the space underneath the green tree
I see in her joy
The joy of Christmas
At this I realize Christmas shall never cease to exist
