My Wee Shelter

by Julia Murdoch aged 11

Winning Poem

Siren screeched
“Not again!”
Where’s my gas mask?
Siblings race past me.
People panic!
I hope Dad’s okay.
Why are we fighting?
The shelter – At last.

So afraid!
So cramped!
Drone of planes deafen me.
Fire and bangs!
Houses crumble!
Mum’s air freshener drowns my nose.
Ground shakes,
I shiver,
Mum sings.
Tea slithers down my throat.
Jam and bread crunch my teeth.
I feel stronger.
Phew – all clear at last.

Don’t want to go
Time to leave
Can’t bear to look!
Screams fill the air,
Rubble and destruction everywhere.
Dark sky descends over destroyed buildings
Gasp!
Where’s our house gone!

Silent tears fell onto me.
Why has this happened?
Broken glass litters the street.
Where do we live now?
What will we eat?
What do we do?
