You may very well be a person like me
And assume that ancient Greeks were utter freaks!
But to tell you the truth, they never were
So let’s begin to highlight their culture in turns
The Greeks wrote plays loaded with emotion
Tragedies, comedies performed in outdoor arenas
They wore colourful masks and stilts to make them tall
But what a shame, for the women never grabbed a role!
Credit to the Greeks for the game of Olympics
Discus, javelin, jumping, running and wrestling
They opened it to all people across the globe
Winners wore olive wreaths but not their robes!
To this day, Aesop’s fables are a child’s delight
A slave who won freedom with his storytelling might
Modern maps in this world were introduced by the Greeks
Latitude, longitude wiped the vague and descriptive
Geometry and shapes in modern mathematics
Owe much to Euclid, Pythagoras and Archimedes
Hippocrates the father of western medicine
Created an oath which is lasting legacy
In politics too, the Greeks were forerunners
Democracy, citizenship and law makers
We give thanks to them for inventions
Lighthouse, water mills, cranes and levers.
