I’m Everest Spring,
My name sounds happy, I used to be happy.
I used to love books
I used to love music
Most of all, I used to love sunsets.
I used to sit on the porch, listening to the same songs,
Sometimes I would read romance books,
I would swoon over how perfect the boy and girl’s relationship would be.
Most of all I was normal.
Normal,
I don’t remember what normal felt like,
Not anymore.
I was in year 8,
Popular,
Pretty,
Smart,
Perfect.
Everyone loved me
Everyone.
The mean girls, The jocks
Teachers, even the meanest ones
Always had something good to say.
But the one I liked most?
Zach.
He was handsome, cute with beautiful blue eyes
that always hit the light just right and perfect sandy brown hair.
But I didn’t like him because of that,
I liked him because he watched the sunset with me,
Every Sunday, we hanged out.
But it was more than hanging out: we quietly became boyfriend and girlfriend,
Sunset dates every Sunday.
Then she came, Deiana.
Everybody loved her – except me.
I knew her – and she wasn’t what everyone thought.
I knew, but I didn’t say anything.
Everything changed, she was suddenly the Pretty, Popular, Smart Perfect Girl.
But I was his girl wasn’t I?
He started getting texts a lot.
In school,
It’s nothing right?
During our dates,
He must be busy.
During breaks,
Planning with friends.
One day, it got the better of me.
I trust him, Just curious
His phone was unlocked, left on the porch table. Went to the bathroom
“Hey. We still on for the coffee Date?”
Date.
“Guess you’re with her, huh?”
“Babe she’s just a friend”
Friend? Babe?
“You said you would end things with her.”
“Just end it. Even if she’s just a friend to you she’s attached to you and I don’t like it”
End it. Just a friend.
Just a friend,
Just a friend.
He left shortly after.
He didn’t know I checked his phone.
He left, but the pain didn’t
We fell in love by the sunset.
I fell in love by the sunset.
Now I know just how deep sunsets can burn.
