A Spirited Halloween

T’was the night of Halloween,
‘All Hollows Eve.’
You could hear the knocks on the door,
kids unrelenting, howling for lollies.
Continuously travelling from house to house,
thumping on door to door like African Wild Dogs,
staying in their packs,
pushing their collection buckets forward,
daringly asking for more.

The streets are crowded with Halloween lovers,
kids, parents, toddlers and teenagers,
all dressed as scary skeletons, volatile vampires,
zany zombies, pitiful princesses, gormless goblins
and just….
the plain normal kid with the cricket bat threatening others for treats.

The fences are hypnotizing with an array of Jack-O-Lanterns burning brightly,
A symbol of street participation.
Yards are adorned with spider webs, skeletons, broomsticks and blood curdling screams.
My house oozes the spirit of ‘All Hallows Eve’,
with a grave, blood severed hands, a rest in peace sign
and a witch in a noose.

Doors are closing
Lights are dying out.
The streets are littered,
with lolly wrappers, sugar vomit and
greenish complexions.
Neurotic parents collect their kids,
only worried about white posh leather seats.

The night will play over and over in the hearts of many.
Great stories to tell to one another.

That’s an interesting poem, Miranda. Your carefully chosen words help me imagine the Halloween scenes in your street! It must have been a lot of fun!
