Seeing is Believing

by Emilia Alman aged 13

People say that seeing is believing.
But it’s hard to believe if you can’t see.
People say, ‘Look! It’s amazing!’
But I can’t look, because I’m blind.

If you are dancing with another,
How do you know who you dance with?
If you are lost without your mother,
How do you find your way home?

You know people don’t understand,
But maybe, just maybe, they won’t.
You know that they know where they stand,
But who is left to help YOU?

People say that seeing is believing.
But it’s hard to believe if you can’t see.
People say, ‘Look! It’s amazing!’
But I can’t look, because I’m blind.

I’ve wondered a few times about the title of this year’s National Poetry Day – VISION. Is it a handicap to partially sighted or blind people? Or maybe it’s a challenge.
