Rock and Water

by Harshita Das aged 13

The boulder is stubborn, refuses to move
It’s grounded in its spot, stiff and proud
As the river placidly manoeuvres its way around
However, its protests and splashes are clear and loud

The Sun sinks into the horizon,
The boulder smiles, it has won
And it pays no mind to the furious water
The stream is ignored, efforts are shunned

But day by day, perseverance keeps the river going
It tackles and injures; it punches and bruises
The rock still obstinately stays in place
The river goes on and on; again, it loses

Both are strong and stubborn, perverse and prideful
But the river wins, because it was humble enough to surrender the battle
It knew that the boulder had not yet won the war
And when it was finally swept away as a grain,
The river smiled, it never gave up
