Poppies in Smoke

by James Carver aged 15

1
Smoke all around
The beating sound of gunfire in my ear
And the dead soldiers lying on the ground
Dead but still alive

2
A bomb about to go off
Stood there like a statue
5…4…3…2…1
Dead soldiers lying on the ground
Dead but still alive

3
A whistle blowing
Long and loud
Blowing to signal the men
Over the top we go
Over the top
Dead soldiers lying on the ground
Dead but still alive

4
A field dotted with paint
Red and white
Where the fallen are at rest
Dead soldiers lying on the ground
Dead but still remembered
