When I Took A Walk

0
by Firefly aged 11

When I took a walk,
near the deep blue sea.
I saw something, that
should not be.

A big black fish, dark
and gray, sailing on
the sea, on that faithful day.

I saw something, that
should not be, dark
and grey and sailing on
the sea.

It smelled so bad, the birds agreed.
What happened? What happened,
to the deep blue sea?

Sweet Little Sorrow

0
by Amy aged 11

Sweet little Sorrow,
quiet as a cat,
sneaks in through the window
and lays down on my lap.

Sweet little Sorrow,
claws my hands and knees,
oh,
sweet little Sorrow,
leave
me
be!

Sweet little Sorrow,
seeps in through my heart,
oh, sweet little Sorrow!
tears it apart!

And then as quickly as it came,
it leaves me with a scar,
oh sweet little Sorrow,
oh,
it ain’t be sweet tomorrow!

Love

by Christina aged 10

Love smells like sweet perfume
Love looks like a cake full of joy
Love feels like a true loves kiss
Love tastes like a sparkling bottle of champagne

Bunnies

3
by Sophie-Jaya Boots aged 8

Little ears as silky as angel’s hair
Little paws that come out of the lair
Little teeth that nibble food
Little legs in a joyful mood
A little nose that senses well
Little whiskers as delicate as a seashell
Little eyes that go blink, blink, blink
A little body that could be dressed in pink
A little tail that swings happily
A little heart that beats naturally
Little bunnies so cuddly
Little bunnies so lovely.

Scooby’s Paw

by Ishaan Singh Sarna aged 13

Winning Poem

Uncle Ben,
Brought you home with him
under his arms.
Your tongue lolling out,
and your eyes wide open
discovering a new place.
When he let you out of his arms,
you came to me,
running;
as if you had known me for years.

We grew up,
played,
cried,
laughed, together:
paw in hand.

When even my shadow left me,
when my soul poisoned my thoughts,
when I held a grudge against smiling,
when happiness was just a word for me;
then you gently
placed your furry paw on my hand,
and sighed sadly
as if you felt that pain.

Now that you’ve left me, alone:
I feel lonely in this cruel world
And this sphere of greedy people.

Both,
My room and my thoughts
redolent with your
smell.

Now-
I wish you could come back, so that
I had someone to share all my secrets with
Without the fear of being judged;
So that, I had someone who would
always be there for me.

I miss tottering with you,
Tumbling with you
and doing the fox poo.
I miss gripping you,
hugging you,
cuddling with you.

Now that I wouldn’t have
anyone
to coax me,
I will relentlessly miss
you.

Pawprint Shaped Dream

by Praniti Gulyani aged 13

Winning Poem

Gentle tears,
Her lustrous eyelashes
Green mirrors
The seamstress’s cat
Dreams spread out on looms,
Picking at them
Strand by strand
Seamstress’s cat
Sitting by an empty bowl
Gently sipping moonlight
Seamstress’s cat
Trampling on the moon
The shadows of needles
Gently stitching his dreams
Seamstress’s cat
The shadows of tapestry
Gently fluttering
The night flaps away
Seamstress’s cat
Every bit of him
For the tapestry
Amidst the thickness of fabric,
Poor seamstress,
Restless fingers, twitching
To gaze at the tapestry
Seamstress’s cat
The start… was a mere strand
The end… was a silky paw print
An imprint on the aisle
of her heart
Seamstress’s cat
Never a mew?
No milk?
No muddy paw prints?
The sprinting illusions
of a Cheshire cat
Painstakingly woven into
a soft, silky paw print
The threads of utmost yearning

The King of The Jungle

by Sam Rozenberg aged 13

Winning Poem

He stands on top of the hill
With his head held high.
He makes sure no one will defeat him,
Or his jungle.
He comes out with a big loud roar,
While the wind is blowing his mane.
He runs fifty miles per hour,
To catch his yummy prey.
His fierce attitude tells him he can do anything.
That’s is why he isn’t a chicken.

Later when he is tired,
He comes home to his family,
His cubs and wife.
He makes sure they aren’t hurt,
And sends them off to bed.
He kisses his wife goodnight,
Then sends her to bed.
The Moon is out and he gives one roar,
“Stay away from my family! Goodnight.”

Morning Catch

by Benjamin Huang aged 9

Winning Poem

when you creep by, the birds always
fly away at the sight of you, leaving
silence and solitude.

when you explode through the acrid air, hungering, you
pounce for the baby stag,
dust gathers beneath
your heavy paws and in your dry lungs

and when an animal’s bright eyes dim like
dying stars, you feel no emotion until you realize
that you are alone once again.

A Jaguar

by Indigo Moss aged 7

Winning Poem

With its mighty roar, tons of stripes and spots galore,
Summoning all the beasts, with its beauty and clashing teeth.
Sister of lions and brother of the tiger,
Everyone stares at this stalking hider.
Up high, in the trees, stealing honey from the bees,
Nursing their cubs till fair and plump,
And after six months, teaching them how to hunt.
And when they are two, here is what they will do,
They will leave their mother all alone, until she makes another clone.
I, myself, love the jaguar, I treat it like golden armour.
You see I have a pet, a male.
Guess his name?
Yes, that’s right, it’s…
JAGUAR!

The Owl

Winning Poem

I saw you through the glassware
Our family heirloom.
Smudged round the rims
A camera out of focus
Caked with dust
Like a leftover painting.

I always failed to climb your eyes
So steep, yet deep
Endless cavity
Churning oceans
Eerie, steel green
Phosphorescent glow
Crypt in every chamber.

What your black beak had killed that day
Now stood in heaven
Watching us glance.
You with your soul
I with my heart
You with no end
I with no start.

Wishes had space to become dreams
In your clear, feathered heart
Words had books to fill
Your wisely soul.

Oxygenated silence
Peered through your eyes
A mirror of your emotions.
Monoxidic noise
Pierced through your heart
Serrated knife edge
Cleaving open hatred.

Only destiny held
What your talons would drop
Only moonlight would seep
Through your wings.

I saw you through the corner of my eye
Before you swooned and swooped
Then flew
Away.
