Ode to Marie Curie

by Hava Omer aged 14

In shadows deep where few would dare,
A light emerged, a fierce affair—
Marie, the trailblazer of her time,
With intellect and spirit, she began to climb.

From Poland’s cradle, dreams took flight,
To Paris’ heart, where knowledge ignited bright,
With Pierre at her side, they delved profound,
In the realm of atoms, new truths were found.

Their labour bore fruit, a radiant glow,
From uranium’s heart, new elements flow—
In 1898, they claimed their prize,
Polonium and radium, to the world’s surprise.

Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1903,
With Pierre and Henri, they set knowledge free;
For revealing the force of radioactivity’s might,
They transformed how we view the unseen light.

Then in 1911, she soared once more,
A Nobel in Chemistry , she could not ignore—
For isolating radium, its power and grace,
Unlocking the secrets of life’s hidden face.

In silent battles, she faced the unknown,
A warrior for science, her resolve shown—
In a war-torn world, with compassion and care,
She brought forth X-rays, in hospitals to share.

Her legacy thrived, through struggle and strife,
Creating cures – gave new life;
From radiation treatments to diagnostics clear,
Her work laid the groundwork for hope and cheer.

Imagine a world where her light had not shone,
Where cancer’s grasp would stand alone,
With lesser knowledge, and fear uncontained,
Her courage ignited, what brilliance she gained!

Gratitude flows for this trail we tread,
For all she achieved, the paths she led—
In every heartbeat of science today,
Marie Curie’s spirit forever will play.

A steadfast pioneer, with wisdom so vast,
Through trials endured, her legacy will last—
In classrooms, labs; her name we revere,
For the impact she made, we’re grateful, we cheer.

So let’s remember this brilliant star,
Whose light guides our journey, both near and far,
Marie Curie, a luminary bright,
Illuminating the darkness, she defined the night.
