Listener Of The Sea

by Mina Simmons aged 11

I am a listener of the waves,
I hear every fish which swims in the current.
I think I am invisible.
Nobody sees me.
Not really.
The waters flow through and then go on,
But I’m still listening.
I am the ear of the predator,
Stalking its prey silently,
Conscious of every noise.
I imagine life in the hustle and bustle of the city.
It’s so quiet here.
I am the first to hear the flick of a shark’s tail,
Before it traps its victim.
The first to hear the horn of the ships from the outside world.
I look up at the ocean liner.
So big.
So loud.
Maybe I do belong here.
