They Who Killed Their Brothers

by Ariktha M Koundinya aged 12

“Get the women and children to safety!
Get the men to fight bravely;
Our brothers are against us, they want us dead!
Come on, rebel men! ” he cried and said

The men were armed as their mercy faded,
And the guns and canons were prepared and loaded
The brave knights, on their horses with courage and might,
With an army behind, all ready to fight

For it were true… a thousand soldiers
Had come to kill their brothers, standing shoulder to shoulder;
They marched with pride and their heads held high ,
For they felt they were the greater tribe.

The bullets were loaded and triggered and impaled
Into men who came their way,and who failed,
Failed to show that they were strong enough
To kill their brothers, to look fierce and tough;

But deep inside they all knew
That only sorrow and death, this war would do
But then, it would be weak to go back on that decision
And weaker still, to retreat

And if only there were someone
To tell them what I’m saying now
That in history no one will be remembered as the greater good
That if only someone would stop and throw that gun down

“Men look at that blood spilt around you,
That was somebody’s father’s or brother’s, you know,
Somebody whom mercy you didn’t show
Somebody whose children will cry now you know

SOLDIERS DON’T BE MONSTERS!
Show that you have a heart
Show them that they will live
To see their children grow up one day, that you let them live

Don’t pull that trigger,
Put down that gun,
Your target is somebody’s father or brother or son;
Look into their eyes pleading for mercy

Put down that gun and everything will change;
History will show that you were the hero,
Just put down that gun and everything will change
Your target is somebody’s father or brother or son.
