Why Kick a Moo Cow

by Brontie Bo Matthews aged 7

Why kick a moo cow,
Why kiss a toad,
Why help a chicken
Across the road?

Why bounce a hedgehog,
Why throw a frog,
Why roll a tortoise
Over a log?

Why kick a moo cow,
Why flick a fly,
Why poke a monkey
In the eye?

Why touch a rhino,
Why flip a flea,
Why bring a lizard
Home for tea?

Why kick a moo cow,
Why shake a snake,
Why chuck a duck,
Into a lake?

Oh, why kick a moo cow?
Why kick a moo cow?
Why kick a moo cow….

Because a moo cow
kicked me
That’s Why!

Competition Winner! Well done.

It’s been 10 years since this was posted so I think I won’t be breaking now 17 year old Brontie’s heart when I mention that I’m pretty sure this poem is from a 2009 book called The Budgie Likes to Boogie. I was trying to find that book based on remembering this poem, and this page came up – so do correct me if I’m wrong, any future viewers of this page!! I can see it says it was for a contest and The Budgie Likes To Boogie looks like it had a 2015 version too so if the contest was for that book it’d make sense! Also I’m not trying to accuse a child of plagiarism, we were all 7 once lmao

Thanks Meg. Poems like this do sometimes slip through. Sometimes a child, or teenager, will claim a poem as their own. But usually it’s not understanding that poems have to be original.
