Internet Poem – Stranger Danger

by Charlotte Smith aged 9

I’ll have lots of fun on the internet today
because me and my friends we’re going to play some games
We’re playing and playing, no-one’s being mean
until a friend request pops up on the screen.
We don’t know this person, will it be okay?
My friends say yes and it will be great
to make a friend on this lovely new site.
We chatted and chatted all day and all night
They asked me so many questions, how do I respond?
I answered them truthfully, I think we’re forming a bond.
They claimed they were a girl, so I’ll call her a she
but how do I know they’re not a he?
I was wondering if she could come around one day
my parents wouldn’t mind if she came to stay?
I told her of my idea, then she typed back and said
“That sounds perfect, but what’s your address?”
Should I tell her the truth or do I tell a lie?
I told the truth, I thought I’d be fine,
until I heard a knock at the door, it must be my friend!
I opened it up and they ran to my bed
They sat down and told me to sit down too
I asked them for their age and they said they were forty-two!
I screamed and screamed “Out! Out! Out!”
I told them to stay away from my house.
The did as I said and left me alone
never to come back to my precious little home
I then noticed they weren’t a girl,
but I didn’t mind in the online world.
I’ll never, ever do that again
I’ll never, ever trust an online friend.
