Innocence

by Teah Francis aged 14

I stand back and watch other kids’ dreams start to fade
Their hopes and visions vanish into the shade
As their innocence is taken from them and stripped away
All they have is what society gives them to say

Made to grow up and live like a man
they lose sight of school and opportunities at hand
Teenagers are a pain, they are numbed in the brain
ONLY because you took their innocence away

How are we supposed to thrive and be successful?
If the pressure you put on us is driving us mental
How are we supposed to fit in?
when we see our actions being claimed as sin

Take away the stereotype and the false identity
You’ll see how we act and how we are meant to be
Don’t tell us Confidence is key
If you’re the one taking it from me

How can we play on your side?
If you hold us behind the fence
How are we supposed to act our age?
If you take away our innocence…
