The Factory on Mars

by Jemima:) aged 10

Here’s what to imagine in this poem
Close your eyes and think about
Climbing in a rocket ship
Putting your seatbelt on

Starting up the engine
Then soaring through the clouds
Reaching the scolding atmosphere
Flying into space

In your mind you’re thinking
What a marvellous place
Gliding past the constellations
Zooming around the moon

Until finally you come to Mars
An unusual sight meets your eyes
Smoke billowing in the wind
Not smoke from a volcano though, something very different

You fly in closer to investigate
What is going on
You get a whiff of chocolate
Feel a tingling on your tongue

You stop at a square metal building
Park in the company car park
You creep up to the window
Finding loads of little

Aliens!
Millions of the things
Eight eyes on antennae
Red bodies like gumdrops

You jump down out of sight
And wonder what to do
Spy on a mini worker
Taking out the trash

Tons and tons of machinery
Press, shape, BASH!
The smell of chocolate overwhelming now
You crawl under a machine

Snatch down a squishy, rectangly object
Sniff it, prod it, poke it
Have a little lick
Tastes sort of familiar

Not a Galaxy nor a Twix
But what could it be?
I’ve got it!
It’s a Mars bar, obviously

You fill a bucket with them
Decide to run away
Just as you start running
You start to hear one say

“Catch her, she’s a thief!!!”
Alarms begin to sound
You rush back through the doors
Fingers wrapped tightly around the bucket

Jump back in your space ship
Put your seatbelt on
Oh, you know all that stuff
Let’s skip the rocket ship things

So now you’re in your spaceship
Setting off in space
The culprit of the crime
In an epic high-speed chase

You reach your nice back garden
Safe and sound on Earth
Mum calls you in for tea
Oblivious to your incredible journey

Just a little later
You’re climbing in to bed
Close your eyes and fall to sleep
Dreaming wonderful things

That’s all I have to tell
About something unbelievable
That was my adventure
To the factory on Mars
