Elegy to a Hamster

by Libby Drysdale aged 10

The cage sits in the garage,
The wheel has fallen silent.
No more Tilly Time at 6pm.
The sound of food being eaten,
Has gone
The rattle of her water bottle has stopped,
Just stillness.
Of where she used to be.
The noise of her running around,
used to help me sleep.
Whenever I drew a family picture,
She would be there.
But now Coco and Ziggy have come,
and I love them just as much.
Yet Tilly’s life has not yet ended,
It has only just begun,
That life is in our hearts.
And that’s the best place to be
