Blitz

by Stephen Cardwell aged 11

Relentless sirens whined like a baby
Screaming in your ear.
Fire engulfed the defenceless houses.
A jagged mountain of charred wood towered over the city.
The scent of ash-filled casualties noses and into their heaving lungs.
Air raid wardens attempted to calm the public.
Firefighters darted to countless calls and tried to diminish the flames.
It was like being punched in the stomach and spitting up the taste of pain.

Competition Runner Up. No prize I’m afraid. But well done!
