Birthdays

by Esme aged 11

My birthday comes again
And normally I can’t wait
But this year I look in the mirror
And wonder
Why do I look like this?
My waist is wider than hers
Does he like her more than me
My nose is larger than hers
My lips aren’t as nice as hers
My hair is shorter than hers
Why am I not a blonde
I could never tell my family
They would laugh and call me silly
I am not regular
I enjoy maths and English
My favourite game is football
I am a bright child
And my friends like me for me
So when my birthday comes around next year
I won’t be asking
Why do I look like this?
I will be thanking my body for showing up every day
to help me live my life.
