Being Mixed

by Ava Mitchell aged 12

Being mixed is so difficult
That’s what people don’t get
They look at my face and start making bets

Are you Mexican? Spanish?
They ask like it’s fine
Guessing my race like it’s some sort of game all of the time

One boy even asked me
Like it was funny or smart
Are you white chocolate or dark from the start?”

I laughed it off but inside it didn’t feel quite right
Why am I compared just to colours black and white

I don’t get mad but it’s tiring
Explaining again and again
Why do I owe them my story
Just so they can understand

Being mixed is so difficult
But I won’t hide or quit
This is who I am and I’m proud of every bit!
