Before the Freeze

by Reya aged 12

Before the freeze
I would sit outside,
Taking in the gentle breeze.

Before the freeze,
Flowers would blooms
Leaves would fall
Birds would chirp.

Before the freeze,
I didn’t need to bundle up.
The layers after layers
Unneeded
Unnecessary.

But now,
That is no more.
No more cheery songs of birds.
No more bright colors
Smothering the yard with joy.

No more frolicking outside.
Freely, carelessly, blissfully.
Only a thick blanket of white
Covering the joy and laughter,
Bringing with it,
A cold, bleak feeling.

But with that thick blanket
Something new is coming.
A new warmth,
A new feeling
A new way of life.

The warmth of the fireplace,
Of hot cocoa and blankets
Is…comforting.
See, it’s not so bad.
A new season
Brings more cheer,
And wipes away all the fear.
