A Battle Cry

by Sapphire Hollis aged 15

Blown away by the dawn and dust,
Lay the soldiers unable to adjust.
Across the field in the midnight moon,
This war will be over soon.

The cannons cry into the starless sky,
I begin to cower and say goodbye
To those I’ve hurt, wounded or failed,
To Heaven I have sailed.

From above my head starts to pound,
The drumming of the cannons replace the sound
Of the whimpering men – injured and frail
Because of the smoke they’ve inhaled.

All I wanted was to find inner peace,
I guess now, it was a beautiful release.
Thousands of men were left to die,
The angel me can’t help but cry.

I quietly weep as my soul slips away,
Sadly not everything is here to stay.
At some point everything will end,
But it’s okay, a new start is just around the bend.
