Ashes to Ashes

by Jane Edwards aged 15

Dark veins of iron twist, molten
wrap the suffocated jewels of your eyes
clamped in cold

Clod churned and squashed under feet
we don’t outweigh the earth’s soft clay
but wish for the power to grind it all to dust

peel back the layers of fine time
what to you see?
the corners wander for dippers
slip beneath
