A Vision of a Unicorn

by Ananya Ghoshal aged 12

RUNNER UP

Silvery mane cascading down
Waterfall of moonbeams and sunshine
Rippling in the scented breeze
As softly, the tinkling brook trickles
Flowing over water-worn pebbles
And pale-pink blossoms drift down to earth.
Her moon-pale, glowing silver-white skin
White as the snow, flushed like the dawn
Glimmering tail swishes to-and-fro
Bound in strands of hopes and dreams
Diamond-shod hooves with a crystalline gleam
Slender legs step with an elegant tread
She embodies grace and elegance
Her neck arched high as she stands aloof
Each sensitive ear alert to any sound
Smooth contours of her torso and flank
Outline her delicacy and perfection
As she stands amidst the sparkling waves.
Her eyes are a mystery, a midnight sky
Deep pools of wisdom and thought commingled
Fairy lights dance in their depths
Finally, pinnacle of perfection, of uniqueness,
Spiraling toward the twilight sky
A rose-tinted, burnished diamond horn
Around which an aura of magic hovers
It possesses unheard-of mystical powers.

As she steps amidst the dew-sodden grass,
Her form gleaming in the gathering darkness;
Stardust and sparkles fall to the ground,
A trail of the unicorn’s deepest essence,
Her inner purity, the goodness of her heart
Her soul so pure, her stain-free mind.
She leaves a silvery mist in her wake
Clouding the path she graced with her steps,
Shrouding all that seek to follow.
