The Rainbow

by Talia Parsons

As blue as the tropical ocean.
As purple as the sweet- smelling lilac in the garden.
As pink as the sunset in the summer.
As green as a fresh avocado.
As yellow as a field of sunflowers.
As black as the dark night sky.

Togetherness

2
by Zainab Data

We should all be together!
We should not be embarrassed to work as a team,
We should have confidence,
And kindness,
To move forward in life,
We should not bully or hurt one another
We are each a better person
When we help each other!
Togetherness is powerful,
It will help us along the way,
Never be afraid of it,
And trust it,
Like you would a good friend!

For You, Young Ones

by Honey P.

This is for you, young ones.
there’s one thing you’ve gotta know.
Even if your parents
never let you send in your poems
until you’re this age,
The Poetry Zone
has always been a good place
to take your first poetic steps.

Superhero Dad

My dad is a superhero!
He is the best superhero ever!
He makes sure everyone is safe and happy,
And he makes everyone smile,
He makes our day bright and perfect,
He never gives up,
To make us feel better,
He helps us with our work,
If we are stuck or confused,
He will come right away!
He loves to make people happy,
And never goes away!
He’s kind hearted and generous,
He loves to spend time,
With his family!
He always gives us treats,
He takes us in trips abroad,
He is the best superhero I’ve ever had!
His name is superhero Daddy!

The End of a Not-really Friend

1
by Harshita Das

My friendship feels flimsy
held together by easily breakable string
Friendship without conflict, it doesn’t feel real
so, the strings – they sting, they sting
We never have real discussions
only small talk about frivolous things
which feel meaningless in this world
of individuality, to which we cling
General conversations, we avoid our problems like a plague
makes me wonder what this friendship even brings
We don’t talk about how her face darkens
when she gazes at my fingers, my sweetheart’s ring
we don’t talk about my clenched fists
Songs of lies and smiles and manipulation we sing

We never talk

Yet, despite this, I like her, really, I do
I laugh at her deadpan humour
even if we’ve never had a real conversation to date,
I like her, really, I wish to be her friend
but our string is flimsy and straining
and I worry, one day we will stop our texts
and years and years will pass
bringing an inevitable end to a not-really friend.

Careless

He walked down the street,
A can of pop in his grasp,
He drank the dregs of it and chucked it to the path,
It rolled down the pavement and down to the river,
Where it fell down the bank and into the water’s shimmer.
Bit by bit the water grew darker,
Murky, clouded, litter-filled… polluted,
As the man looked around him he saw more human beings,
They were tossing litter to the ground – oblivious to everything.
The wind grew wild and it started to rage,
The sky clouded over as if it were to rain,
The plants crumbled away as if being burnt to ashes,
And that’s when the hurricane started…
It lashed through the sky,
It tore buildings apart,
Trashed everything in it’s path,
A tsunami erupted,
As thunder and lightning exploded,
Like laser beams in a video game,
Smashing everything in sight….
Wrecking the entire city,
The country,
Destroying the entire planet.
Think back to where all this began…
One ‘harmless’ can,
Chucked to the floor by a man…
A human being.

Dear Future Me

by Harshita das

I apologize for the terrible burden I inflict on you
Every day, with my mistakes
My faults, my shortcomings
And you have to face the consequences
For my bad decisions.
I shall not ask for you forgiveness, nor
Your understanding
(although I believe you understand much
more than anyone else)
I simply ask
For my sake
To not make those mistakes again
I want you
To treat your future self
Much better than I treat mine

This is for all those people
Who hide in the dark,
For those who feel hopeless,
For those with a broken heart.

I Am a Little Bee

I am a little bee
that can barely see
when I look at the mirror I can’t see me
because I am a little bee

My Mother (Happy Birthday Mama 8th June)

2
by Harshita Das

My mum was the first creature I saw
The first to hold me, to rock me gently
My baby-self stopped crying herself raw
And tried to touch the tenderness of her gaze

She watched with an earnest face
My attempts to squiggle a masterpiece on my textbooks
And when she scolded me with her burning gaze
It was painful, because her cutting words were laced with concern
I remember loving her fierce determination, her smile
I recall, when I cried to a cold, uncaring world
In her embrace, she swore; For me, she’d walk a million miles
And the world warmed with her words

She’s happy; Relaxed, and the worrying lines on her face disappear
When her fingers fly over the keys of the piano,
She loves to play the songs she hears
Loves to fill the room with joyous music
She loves her walks in the moonlight
Strolling across the neighborhood, under the dim-lit lamps
Loves hearing the chirping of insects at night

But when she returns, her quiet smile
Tells me that her overflowing jar of near-infinite love
Is all reserved for us
