Winter Contrasts

A snowflake drifting through the air
I admire its delicate perfection
Frostily white, glowing softly amid
the mid-winter moonshine.
Tiny clusters of ice filmed over with snow
frosted with magical tiny icicles
Floating down, down, down to the earth.
I catch it on the tip of my tongue
Savoring the taste of new-fallen snow;
Yet with a small pang of grief
at the destruction of something so beautiful.

I trudge home through carpets of snow
Finer than even Persian ones
Soft, crunching and rustling beneath
the crushing steps of my boots.
The comforting chill and cold of the snow
clings around my knees, pleading.
Don’t go home yet, it says. Play with me!
And the lure is so irresistible
that eventually, I do.
I fall backwards into the white coldness
powder-fine snow piles up all around me
Envelops me like a chilly blanket.
I thrash around, laughing, chilled to the core.
Make pretty patterns in the snow
build snow-castles, make a snowman –
Rather crooked, but he’ll do!
I throw snowballs, bury myself in snow
Burrow into it, then thrash to get free
What fun!

At last, rosy-cheeked, out of breath,
I approach home. Home!
A warm, welcoming glow from the lantern
set in the window for me to see.
I open the door and collapse into the warmth
falling into a big squashy armchair
Just as I fell into the snow, ‘cept it’s warmer.
Flickering flames in the fireplace
spilling light onto the homely walls
Dancing, at play on the hearth in front of me.
I warm my feet, toast my hands before the blaze.
How good it feels!
Snuggling into a thick furry blanket
my dog beside me, so warm and alive,
sipping hot chocolate that warms my insides
spilling down my throat just like
the firelight spills onto the walls.
I savor the joy
of coming into the warmth from the cold
As long as it lasts.
Next day I will go out
and get all cold and chilled again
Then warm up! just like today.

I love all the glorious aspects of winter
the Yuletide season, time of mirth
Joy and blessings all around
because Christmas is coming, you know!
But what I love best
Is the cosy feeling of going
from cold to warm
and then the wild recklessness of
warm to chilling cold
and then doing it all over again.
Summer’s too hot for me!
But in winter you can have both,
Hot and cold glorify each other by turns
That’s what I love about winter!

Christmas

Underneath the lighting noon,
There was the fading moon.
Beside the river far away,
The sun was rising for it to become day.
Trees inside houses, stockings on walls,
Every person going to malls.
Kids playing together,
Making presents all together.
Decorating their Christmas tree,
Ready tonight to dance with glee.
”Santa is coming tonight!”
”Now let’s eat our food in delight!”
As everyone is fast asleep,
A visitor has come for a peep.
Getting in houses from the chimney,
Putting presents under a tree!

A Poem About Winter

1
by Caleb aged 10

The ice covers the frozen ground
The grass has turned into a pure white
An icicle in the corner, slowly melting
Drip, drip

Snowflakes flurrying all around
People milling around busily; huddled against winter’s frosty bite
The rain, angrily spitting and sputtering against the roof
Pitter, patter

The snow descends without a sound
We sit idly, sheltered from nature’s spite
Silhouetted against the fire in the grate
Flicker, flicker

The animals hibernate under the ground
The robin sings of their frozen plight
The lonely owl hoots into the moon
Twit, twoo…

Snow is Falling.

Snow is falling
Christmas is calling
and the angels start to sing.
Merry Christmas everyone,
wait till you see what Christmas will bring.
Roast turkey on the table,
people laughing and having fun.
Santa’s sleigh might fly as high as the moon;
I really wish to see him soon.

A Mermaid’s Christmas

A mermaid’s Christmas is a happy event
Where mermaids come together to celebrate

Christmas caves are decorated with gems and shells
and starfish fairy lights shimmer fantastically
The Christmas tree is made from seaweed
With coral baubles and a pearl on top.

They have a Christmas feast with
Mussels, clams, oysters and tuna.
And toast ‘Merry Christmas’
with delicious Seaweed cocktails.

They pull oyster shells apart for crackers
Wear pearl crowns for party hats.
They make sandmen on the sea bed
With shells for their smile, gems for eyes
And driftwood for their noses.

Dolphins pull their mer-sleigh,
delivering presents containing gifts of the sea
Finally, the mermaids happily go to bed
after their extremely busy day.

Secrets about Santa

Hello everybody, my name is Mrs Claus,
My first name is Mary, what about yours?
As you may have guessed, my husband is Santa,
Something you probably didn’t know is that he loves to drink Fanta.

There’s lots of secrets about Santa that you didn’t know,
Can you believe it, that he really hates snow!?
His favourite reindeer is Dasher because he saved my life,
Without Dasher’s help, Santa would have no wife!

Another secret about Santa is that he loves to eat fish,
Sometimes mixed with cookies, what a weird dish!
People don’t know, the colour of Santa’s ride
Inside it’s pink and glittery (but red on the outside).

When nobody is looking, Santa likes to dance
And wear pretty pink dresses, whenever he gets a chance.
Santa is a bit silly and always messing around,
He is the craziest man that I have ever found!

Santa likes to eat green cake, which is made of broccoli,
He gets me to make it for him with a cup of hot sprout tea.
I would never change him even though he’s mad,
I really do love him and without him I’d be sad.

Robin

A little robin sits on my fence,
The brightest bird I ever saw.
Clasped in its sharp, copper talons
Holds a squirming grub, on which it gnaws.

A little robin sits on my fence,
It’s chest in crimson flame.
In its shiny, coal-black eyes you see
That this bird has no shame.

A little robin sits on my fence,
With a beak, sharp as thorns.
It spreads its great brown wings,
On a flight to visit its chicks
Which this little bird has borne.

A little robin soars in the sky,
Flying up above.
I hope it gets home safely,
To meet with its joyful love.

A little robin sits patiently,
Eyes gleaming with pride.
As it watches its young fly away,
Past all the Christmas lights.

Cold Christmas

Christmas be cold
On a card write BOLD
Write Christmas cards
Drive to see family, you drive 100 yards
Gran and Grandad send you gifts
Mum or dad give you lifts
Buy a Christmas tree
Loads of presents for me
Go to your friend’s house
Wear your favourite blouse
Love Christmas and have fun

Let’s Rewind

Let’s Rewind
Before all of this, most things were good
I could kiss my mum without worrying
Now I wonder, Should I? Could I?
But this invisible enemy envies us all
I am sure that it’s worse than maleficent sceptre

It’s trying to let us down but we cannot let them call
It tried to steal our souls…
Just like Hades, Who took the souls?
This enemy rose
As they took down this peace
This life is worse than the Evil queen’s apple

It’s like we are Sir Isaac Newton,
That apple will fall
We have to protect ourselves as it’s going to fall for us all!

It stuck us in an island with a barrier, no way out
It seems like everyone was turned to stone

And tricked by Ursula, witch of the seas pouting it out,
Oh Aladdin where are you?
We could do with some genie right now Yankee doodle doo!
Jafar, Jafar he stole our freedom, I feel like we are in a lamp!
Bring our wishes true!
Come and set us free
How do we ask you the right way?
Oh Aladdin, where are you?

Let’s compare our life to Cinderella,
In the end we shall succeed but for now
Your family and friends is all you need.

Christmas Eve

by Tilly aged 9

It’s Christmas eve, I lay in bed,
Waiting for Santa to fly ahead,
I wake in the morning and look out of my window,
I see all of the snow,
I go and wake my parents,
I jump on their bed,
I go to get my stocking, which hangs above the fireplace,
It is full of presents,
Santa MUST have been!
