Bonkers

by Jilly Jargon aged 65

I love my Mummy, even though she’s a bit bonkers
People say I’m like her, and it’s true
I look like her, I sound like her
And I’m a bit bonkers, too

Christmas

by Elqui Johnston aged 6

Winning Poem

Crackling ice.
Holly spiking on your fingers.
Roast turkey warming in your belly.
Icicles hanging beside your window.
Smiling snowmen in winter.
Toasty toes by the fire.
Merry Christmas everyone.
Angels being graceful.
Santa’s coming to town on his sleigh.

Nothing For Her

1
by Veda Dharwar aged 10

Winning Poem

She gazed at the Christmas trees
lighting up the street,
she wished that she could swap with those families,
but there was nothing for her,
she was nothing but a filthy ragamuffin,
crouching in a reeking corner,
caked in snow and dust,
whilst the sleigh bells laughed their sad laugh,
and all that she could do was hope,
for there was nothing for her,
nothing to spare on Christmas eve,
nothing for that one poor soul.
There was noting for her.

Cuddles in the Chill

1
by Chloe Smith aged 14

Winning Poem

Slip in tidy as the warmth of your chest swallows my cold
We watch the white fall to the moor
Can I tell this might be Christmas spent well?

Hot cocoa breeze swirls around the room
with the warmth of the crackling flames on the stone beside us

Music of chiming and jolliness surround
the moment I’m spending with you

We snuggle closer as the white wind shakes the roof
Let’s stay here
Let’s spend this time together

We watch the snow storm pass by
We see the glitter gold and the silver lining of the wrapped presents
underneath the glow of a tree holding many balls of green and red

I know I’m happy at this time of year
when we are cuddling in the chill

Christmas is Time to be Together

Runner Up

Christmas is here, so let’s all cheer,
Here comes Santa,
Run downstairs, are there any presents?
It’s time to see your family,
Sisters and brothers come home,
Turkey is roasting in the oven,
Mum is keeping an eye on dinner,
And dad is fast asleep,
So invite friends and all of your family.

I am so excited,
See all the lights twinkling

Time to go to sleep,
It’s very exciting,
Merry Christmas everyone,
Everyone is excited about Santa coming,

Twinkling in the distance are the Christmas lights,
On top of the tree is the star,

Beneath it are all the presents,
Everyone is waiting to open all the presents

Talking all at once,
Opening each present slowly,
Getting excited when my turn arrives,
Everyone takes it in turns to open a present,
Thanking each other for the surprises,
Happy Christmas everyone,
Enjoy the family being together,
Rejoice it’s Christmas Day.

For Santa – My Last Minute Note

3
by Iona Mandal aged 8

Dear Santa,

I have some worries….

I hope I am first on your list
I have lost my school bag and nearly broken my wrist.

My new book is tattered, the pages are ripped
The biscuit I baked is severely chipped.

My mum and dad are in a big, big row
My doll needs a dress and frilly, blue bow.

My hands are dripping wet, I need a new towel
Mum asked me to plant seeds, I need a new trowel.

My clock is broken and my blanket is rough
Thank your dear Santa, I think that’s enough.

Christmas Past

Each Christmas I remember
The ones of long ago;
I see our mantelpiece adorned…

A Christmas Wish

I’d like a stocking made for a giant,
And a meeting house full of toys…

My Christmas Love

1
by Emily Moore aged 10

I think of myself as a beautiful girl,
But oh no according to Bradon Seagirs,
I’m ugly,
It is Christmas Eve people,
You never find your true love,
Even if she is so close,
She is never,
According to this boy I’m outstandingly bad at art,
You can never get your true love,
I still can’t believe that it’s Christmas Eve,
It was time to go home now,
On my way back,
I crashed into a boy,
I couldn’t help myself for recognizing this boy,
It couldn’t,
No it couldn’t,
No it wouldn’t,
Be Ethan Malik,
My old boy friend,
No it couldn’t,
I doubted myself again,
I felt like I had my true love,
No,
That doesn’t happen,
No-one finds their true love,
No,
I felt it,
And I knew it,
I had found my own true love,
No,
That doesn’t happen,
I had found my Christmas love,
Suddenly,
No it was 9:30,
I was out 2 hours late,
I ran back to my house,
Stopped at the front door,
I didn’t feel like it was a good time to go in,
Something bad was going on,
But it can’t be bad,
It is Christmas Eve,
Nothing goes wrong,
I stood still for about half an hour,
Outside the front door,
Whatever was going on in there was bad,
Really bad,
That was it,
I went in,
“Mum! What happened?”,
She was no longer alive,
She had died,
She had died,
I sank to the floor,
No,
It is Christmas Eve,
I was all alone for 1 hour,
Then I called the ambulance,
I started to cry,
It was Christmas Eve and my Mum had died,
I was alone for Christmas,
Nothing like that had happened to me,
Or my family before,
It turns out Mum had cancer,
I started to cry again,
Then,
I was no longer alive,
I had died,
I had died,
