Vicious Vikings

Winning Poem

Vikings were very vicious,
They collected swords and axes and spears
Of different shapes and sizes.

They were brilliant swordsmen,
They would dance around striking their opponent,
till one of them … DIED!!

They were three tribes, Hooligan, Berserk and Bog-burglar.
Hooligans and Bog-burglars got on well,
but if you ever stepped foot on the Berserk island,
They’d go…BERSERK!!

Vikings may have been violent
but have helped us in many ways,
They’ve given us roads, houses, pavements
and many other things,
They may have been vicious,
but they were helpful.

What a Horrible Thing War Is

Winning Poem

World War 2

Crouching in the Anderson Shelter
Watching our house collapse
A fire flickers in the moonlight
What a horrible thing war is.

Clutching my hated gas mask
As the train enters Devon
Little Perkins lives no more
What a horrible thing war is.

Sitting in the Town Hall
Being chosen like animals
Gazing at my new home
What a horrible thing war is.

Numerous outfits are long gone
Appetites are getting smaller
Dear Mr Jenkins was shot down
What a horrible thing war is.

Years go by and the war never stops
High-flying hopes are falling
Though the death-rates clamber on higher
What a horrible thing war is.

Smiles creep over Britain’s faces
As the news of Victory spreads
Now grown-up children run into their mother’s arms
What a horrible thing war is.

Over The Top

by Robbie aged 11

Winning Poem

I said Goodbye to Mum and Dad
And marched off to the war
Mum told me that I looked so smart
As I walked out of the door.

I think Dad knew as he didn’t wave
And he almost shed a tear
Just what I would be facing
His heart was full of fear.

It’s 1915 and I don’t look smart now
I cannot hardly stand
The mud and cold that awful smell
A gun poised in my hand.

Please take me home
Where the grass is green
And the birds fly in the sky
I want to see my Mum again
I do not want to die.

My Dog Ate My Social Studies Textbook

Winning Poem

My dog began to speak to me
After he ate some history
He knows the Egyptians and the Greeks
My dog knew knowledge historians seek
He told me that Egypt has fertile land
But there is a lot of desert sand
Greece has a lot of olives and cheese
But they had war beyond the great seas
Romans have reigned two hundred years
Because of the wars fought with spears
The Vikings were pirates of the UK
But they are still feared by people today
My dog told me many things about history
I write this poem very happy
Despite the fact I knew these facts
There is one thing I do lack
A social studies study guide
Because my dog ate my textbook

Perfect Hieroglyphics

0
by Natalia Coiro aged 16

You draw little pictures,
Scratching the poor wall.
Covering tall structures
Like it’s nothing at all.

How is it that all could draw
When all I do is tremble?
Hand shaking as I attempt to soar.
Words I can’t assemble.

Yet I must admit,
The beauty held in each letter,
Even though I cannot commit,
Hieroglyphics is so much better.

Take a Bow – The Greeks

0
by Iona Mandal aged 9

You may very well be a person like me
And assume that ancient Greeks were utter freaks!
But to tell you the truth, they never were
So let’s begin to highlight their culture in turns
The Greeks wrote plays loaded with emotion
Tragedies, comedies performed in outdoor arenas
They wore colourful masks and stilts to make them tall
But what a shame, for the women never grabbed a role!
Credit to the Greeks for the game of Olympics
Discus, javelin, jumping, running and wrestling
They opened it to all people across the globe
Winners wore olive wreaths but not their robes!

To this day, Aesop’s fables are a child’s delight
A slave who won freedom with his storytelling might
Modern maps in this world were introduced by the Greeks
Latitude, longitude wiped the vague and descriptive
Geometry and shapes in modern mathematics
Owe much to Euclid, Pythagoras and Archimedes
Hippocrates the father of western medicine
Created an oath which is lasting legacy
In politics too, the Greeks were forerunners
Democracy, citizenship and law makers
We give thanks to them for inventions
Lighthouse, water mills, cranes and levers.

Roman Life

by Issa Mubarik aged 10

The Roman times weren’t very pleasant,
nor with the execution or the wars.
But look on the bright side, the beautiful buildings
and the bright shining amour that looked like gold,
pure gold.
The Roman emperor loved to have mosaics.
The beautiful city of Rome is still around,
but some is in ruins, no longer a town.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could to go back in time,
live like a Roman, fight like a knight?

Roman Invasion

by Kate Jackson aged 9

“Bang”
Everyone was scared
I hid in a hole in the ground
My nose could smell smoke
Then I closed my eyes
Dreaming that I would be safe and sound
After I made a wish that I would survive

Next I peeped to see if they were there
Of course they were here
As scared as a fly that’s about to get squashed
Luckily they didn’t spot me
Thank goodness I made that wish

All of a sudden I had a lightbulb moment
It was an escape idea
I got up
And told everyone my idea
I went to the Barbarians

Next I distracted them by annoying them
The Barbarians followed me into a house
With the key I locked the Barbarians in
Everyone went out of the camp
If we’d taken any longer we would have been caught

Read About Shakespeare

by Bella aged 9

Read about Shakespeare
He’s one of a kind,
Coming up with words
You may not find
In a dictionary, thesaurus, your brain or online,
But his work will never be as good as mine!

He’s dead famous too… literally
He died years back; his work inspires me
But he’s still writing now in heaven above
I know cause I’m this wonderful man;
this was written with love…

0
by Lucy Kay aged 7

Everyone always seems to forget what things were like 100 years ago.
But sometimes I sit and wonder what people used to do.
Did cruel teachers beat you and make you black and blue?
I wonder what they played for lots of different games.
Did they play leap frog or had that not been invented yet?
Or did they sit and think of all the things they could do?
What would they do if they ran out of food?
Would they run away or would they sit and stay?
I wish I could see what it was like when children had maids and parents didn’t care!
But I think I’ll just stick to now.
Oh, I wonder what it was like a hundred years ago.
