Unicorns

2
by Olivia Matthews aged 10

The unicorns gallop with all their might
getting ready to take flight
up in the midnight sky
they fly star-like high

Their wings brightly shine
I can’t believe I can call one mine
Well, I can’t call one mine as they should be free
this is their world they shouldn’t flee

All through the night ,
the unicorns fly without a fright
but now the sunrise is here
the unicorns cannot be near

My Birthday

4
by Samiksha aged 10

I wake up in the morning and see the date -17 January
I’m gonna be ten and make a wish,
Keeping it secret and being happy,
I’m gonna eat pizza while the rest have fish.

Though no-one knows my birthday is today,
I open my laptop and go on to chat,
And talk to everyone and say:
“Today is my birthday and i want a pet cat.”

They won’t come to a party so I won’t have presents,
But I don’t care care,
Still I am miffed,
Because I have to share!

My brother hates cats so I won’t have one,
But I get a red chocolate bar,
Still it wasn’t much fun,
I really loved my card because it was the first, so far.

I make cards but no one makes them for me,
But never mind,
I am still happy,
And try to be kind.

I tell my BFF it is my birthday,
But she doesn’t reply,
Although she is always free in a Sunday,
I felt very, very sad but I dare not cry.

No one sang happy birthday to me,
While I cut the cake and made a wish,
Oh, can’t you see?
How hard I am trying to be happy.

At the end of the day I write my diary,
It was the worst birthday yet.
I go to chat and see just one happy birthday written to me,
I write thank you though it was the worst birthday yet…

The very next day I find only one comment,
Saying happy birthday,
I write thank you and slowly press send,
I shut the laptop thinking to myself I hated yesterday!

Light

0
by Hamzah Rather aged 8

The horse is white,
It leaps with might,
With beauty bright,
And believes in light.

It’s brave as before,
It asks no more.
Puts forward a hoof,
Never makes a poof.

In conditions great,
With a good mate,
It gets groomed with care,
The brush sticks in its hair.

The strokes are gentle,
The whips not needed,
The mounting cuddle,
Nothing pleaded.

The laughs aloud,
The feeling of being proud,
The thanking and praise,
They never said a bad phrase.

Stepping over rocks hard,
Gliding through the sky.
Letting go of a card,
Making your day fly.

The dread sound of cries,
The coming of the flies.
No hay,
The vibration of a neigh.

The fall to the ground,
People all around.
Staring at the horse,
With remorse.

The horse is white,
It leaps with might,
With beauty bright,
And believes in light.

The Lion

Roaring animal
With fury fur
Eats anything
In his sight
King of the jungle
His rules
Maybe soft
Don’t mess
With him
The Lion!

Teacher

I cannot write it here
because it’s for my homework,
but I don’t know kenning words for a teacher
so I was hopping you could send me
a list of kenning words that rhyme
for a teacher
please.

Sisters

by Lewam aged 7

They’re always whingeing
They are so annoying
They are so interrupting
SISTERS!
They are always moaning
And boasting
They are always mean
SISTERS!

A Trini Christmas Before Covid

0
by Annaliese aged 10

Enjoying drinks across the yard are my uncles,
Aunts enjoying thick pieces of cake,
My cousins all dancing to Parang,
Poinsettias on the table, presents under the Christmas tree,
Eating sponge cake,
Ready to open our presents.
We tear the wrapping paper and rip off bows
as we ask each other, “What did you get?”
Singing and dancing to Christmas Carols,
Boom!!! Crack!!!!!!! Fireworks illuminate the dark sky,
Ponche de creme were poured into glasses for adults
but for the children came the sparkling non-alcoholic wine.
The sad part folks was that those times were before covid,
For 2020 Christmas was as quiet and boring as never before.
No singing, no dancing, for limits for gatherings were strict,
masks, sanitizer and gloves were the new fashion,
No loud music, not a lot of fireworks.
So I pray to God, “I want my true trini Christmas back!”

Covid-19

We never saw it in China
We thought it was a rumour
We thought it was temporary
We never said it was true
We always said
“Of course it’s fake Of course it’s not true.”
But we never noticed that it was true
It separated our friends and family
And took them to hospital
If you want to survive too you better stay at home
If you want to survive you had better wear a mask
If you want to survive too, you’d better not go to class
If you want to survive too, you better not get sick
But if you’re tested positive, you better hope to get better
If you can’t that’s the end of you
If you don’t have covid in your area you better be lucky…
BECAUSE THE WHOLE WORLD HAS COVID TOO!
