Write a Poem For Christmas

This competition is now closed. The winners will be announced soon.

Write a poem for Christmas. It can be a funny poem about reindeer on the roof, Grandad hanging up his smelly socks for Santa or Mum dropping the Christmas pud. It can be sad. Not everyone has a happy Christmas. Think about the homeless or refugees. Or it could be serious. How about writing a prayer for peace? Your poem might be religious – Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus – or about other aspects of the festive season. If you don’t celebrate Christmas, send us a poem about the holidays.

Poems can be long, short, rhyming or non-rhyming, and in any style. You may enter as many poems as you like. But remember, we are looking for originality. We suggest you write the poem first, save it on your computer, then cut and paste it into the form. Do double check it – make sure it says what you want it to say, that it has a nice, flowing rhythm and check your spellings.

We have five copies of Read Me 2 to award as prizes.

Read Me 2, contains a poem for every day of the year from the very best classic and modern poets. From poets including W. H. Auden, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Carol Ann Duffy, Seamus Heaney, Dylan Thomas, W. B. Yeats, Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, Roald Dahl, Charles Causley, Eleanor Farjeon, Philip Larkin and many more.

Write your poem in the competition box below. And make sure you include your email address so that we can contact you if you win. You don’t have to be British or come from the UK to enter but poems must be in English. And you must be between 3 and 18 years old to enter. Poems MUST be your own work.

All poems entered will be shown on the website in the run-up to Christmas. The competition closes at noon on Christmas Eve. (December 24th). You’ll find out who has won, and winners will be notified, in early January. Good luck!
