Fly Through

by Faith Schadewald aged 15

I look up to the sky, and I see him fly.
His head is held high, and he’s so full of pride.
A spirit of strength and freedom.
A mind full of wisdom.

They say he’s nothing.
They say he’s just a bird.
But what you don’t know,
He symbolizes love and hope.
He’s what our country looks up to everyday,
At least, that’s what they say.
Everyday, they turn their backs on the promises they make.
And everyone else is stranded,
Waiting for their rights to walk in one day.

But he still flies.
I watch him in beauty.
He sees me, all mesmerized.
And he says to me…

Child don’t be afraid.
Don’t be so angry.
I know today is cloudy,
But tomorrow the sun will shine.
I know, tomorrow will be a better day.
You just gotta take it, one step at a time.
It’s going to be alright.
Everything will be okay.
You just gotta take it day by day.

I’ve ridden the American flag.
I’ve seen cloudy and sunny days.
I’ve seen hopeless souls,
And wondering eyes.
Darkness always brews.
But there’s always a little clue,
And sometimes people are a little bit blue,
But happiness is always renewed.
Everyone finds a way to fly through .

After all, I should know…
I fly with the American flag.
Child don’t be so afraid.
In time, in time,
This country will be truly free.
And it will be the good old USA.
Instead of the KKK.
Child it’s going to be okay.
Remember I stand up for the American flag.
But it’s your choice to let it fly and come alive.

But one day, I do foresee,
This country will open it’s eyes.
Equity and freedom will roar and rise.
Racism and sexism will fall.

Remember dear,
It’s not the flag that’s doing the wrong. It’s the people you know.
The words that are said.
And the lies that are being spread.
It’s up to you.

After all, I should know
I fly with the American flag.
I’ve seen the ups and downs of this country.
I’ve seen the tears fall.
I’ve fought with the brave souls of the lost and forgotten.
Yet I still fly.

Look into my eyes.
Look at my torn down feathers.
Do you see me still flying?
Hell yeah! I’m flying high!
I’m soaring through the skies, just like a dreamer.

Go be a dreamer,
Be a leader,
A teacher.
Go be a dreamer.

Child don’t be so afraid.
One day everything will change.
We’ll be living in harmony,
Creating beautiful melodies.
Beautiful memories.

Fly through my dear, fly through.
